Spring is already in full bloom downstate—but what if you could experience it all over again on Drummond Island?
Just a few hours north, Drummond Island is only beginning to wake up. With temperatures lingering in the crisp 50s and 60s, the island is coming alive with wild, early-season magic.
Spring wildflowers and mushrooms
Prairie smoke is beginning to bloom on Maxton Plains alongside paintbrush flowers and the soft catkins of the pussy willow.
For those willing to slow down and look closely, trillium and lady slippers can be found popping up in wooded areas and alongside trails.
A little persistance will reward you with black and white morel mushrooms hiding amongst leaves on the forest floor.
Along the shorelines and deep in the woods, spring announces itself loudly
The trees themselves seem alive with sound as warblers, redstarts, and vireos chatter nonstop. Overhead, terns, osprey, gulls and bald eagles command the sky. Loons, mergansers and grebes glide through the water, while sandhill cranes, blue heron, bitterns, and pipers patrol the water’s edge.
Drummond Island’s rocky shorelines and protected bays create excellent habitats for the diverse collection of bird species you can find along the North Huron Birding Trail. Click below for more information and a map to the best viewing areas on the island.
On the water, spring fishing is in full swing:
- Follow the yellow perch runs and steelhead action
- Troll for Atlantic salmon and lake trout in the deep waters of the St. Mary’s River mouth
- Cast along the edges of weed beds and drop-offs for walleye or northern pike in weedy, shallow bays
Bring your own boat and gear—many of our homes come with a dock or boat slip, or book a local fishing charter today.
The Drummond Island Farmers & Artisans Market
Starting on May 23rd, the market occurs every Saturday throughout the summer from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and is held in the Visitors Center parking lot at the Four Corners. This weekly market brings together local farmers, artists, and artisans offering fresh foods, handcrafted items, and one-of-a-kind finds in a welcoming community setting.
Spring on Drummond Island is noisy in the best possible way: raw, untamed, exciting, and unmistakably alive.
Roads that sat nearly empty all winter begin filling again with trucks pulling trailers, ORVs heading toward the trails, boats returning to marinas, and visitors rediscovering the island after a long northern winter. Campfires burn again. Docks creak back to life. Businesses reopen their doors for another season.
If you’ve already had your taste of spring downstate… come find it again on Drummond Island.
