Life Lately, Up North – Drummond Island’s Growth and the Future

May 19, 2026

Over the past several decades, Drummond Island has experienced tremendous growth in tourism and recreation. That growth has brought new energy, new visitors, and important economic opportunities for many local businesses, workers, and families. At the same time, it has also created real concerns about infrastructure, environmental impacts, crowding, noise, and the long-term sustainability of the island we all care deeply about.

Many community members have expressed growing concerns about the increasing discussions surrounding short-term rentals, property rights, nuisance complaints, tourism impacts, and the future direction of the island.

We believe the answer is not to divide into “pro-tourism” and “anti-tourism” groups.

The answer is to work together toward a better model of tourism — one built on respect, stewardship, responsible recreation, and community involvement.

We can support local businesses, preserve access to public lands and trails, protect private property rights, and still care deeply about protecting the natural beauty and character of Drummond Island.

Communities across Michigan are already moving in this direction. The “Respect Marquette County” campaign is one example of a community-wide effort that encourages visitors and residents alike to help preserve the places they love while still supporting tourism and recreation.

A stronger future for Drummond Island could include:

  • Supporting local businesses and year-round jobs
  • Preserving access to trails, waterways, and public lands
  • Encouraging respectful recreation and tourism
  • Protecting natural resources and sensitive areas
  • Improving infrastructure and community amenities
  • Strengthening partnerships between organizations, businesses, residents, and local government
  • Investing a portion of tourism-related funding into stewardship, recreation management, beautification, and community projects

Right now, we are listening, gathering perspectives, and exploring what a constructive, community-based approach could look like moving forward.

Drummond Island is special. Protecting it while keeping it vibrant will take all of us working together.
